Note

This is an article for 鰻 Advent Calendar 2017. Japanese version is after the English version.

I need to, have to, must use English because of my work. It's not so easy for me. However, I'm thinking my English getting better with my effort, gradually. And I also think there are some tricks to achieve it. So I'm thinking for it.

Tricks

1. Use English everyday as possible

This is the most important part. To do this, we need to find that fan things for you. For me, like the below.

So, I actually don't have opportunities to speak English. I'd like to have that. It might be good to have an online English conversation class. It's not so expensive, around 5~6,000 JPY/month.

2. Try to have opportunities to have an English communication

  • Go to English school * There are a lot of online schools
  • Have English speaker friends * Not only native speakers but also ESL friends are nice
  • Go abroad * Attend conferences, and make friends * It might be good to have a chance as business trips rather than just sightseeings. Because it force you to use English.

3. Try to move non-Japanese company

This is very related to the above things. If you move to non-Japanese company (like me), you'll get a change to use English more. And your English skill should be improved, eventually. Otherwise, you'll need to quit the company because of your English skill, it really depends on your responsibility, though.

Summary

Personally, moving company is really happy decision, so far!(even if my previous team was dissapeared :-p). And if you have high skill of programming, infrastructure, or like the other IT area skills, that should be really helpful for your career.

For me, sometimes, it's really hard to understand the discussion in many English meeting. But I'll ask someone about the conclusion or have a another discussion if we want to have it.

I often feel my English and technical skill is not enough, actually. But I'm writing this article for the people who are hesitating to have an English conversation. And I also think this article should encourage and stimulate myself.

私は、今、仕事で英語を使わなければならない状況です。それは、私の仕事の 一つが OpenStack の upstream での開発であり、コミュニケーションに英語 を使うからです。でも、それは、私にとって、そんなに簡単なことではありま せんでした。しかし、色々な努力によって、少しずつ改善してきていると思っ ています。それには、ちょっとしたコツらしきものがあるように思うので、コ コで少し考えてみたいと思います。

コツ

1. 可能な限り英語を毎日使う

これは、最も重要な部分です。これを続けるには、英語学習することの楽しみ・ 意義を見つけることが重要です。楽しくないことは続きません。。今、私がやっ ていることとしては、次のようなものがあります。

なので、今の所、英語を話す機会があんまり無い状況です。オンライン英会話 を受講するとかして、英語を話す機会を増やそうかと思っています。

2. 可能な限り英語でのコミュニケーションをする機会を増やそう

  • 英会話学校に行く * 今はオンライン英会話スクールもあるので、気軽に始めたいときには有用 と思います。
  • 英語を話す友だちを持つ * 必ずしもネイティブである必要はなく、（私たちと同じように）第2言語 として英語を話す（English as a second language）人でも良い。むしろ、 インターナショナルな中では、場面ではネイティブスピーカーが少ない場 合もあり、色々なアクセントに慣れておくことは非常に重要。
  • 外国に行く * カンファレンスに参加する。そこで友だちが作れればより良い。 * 観光で行くよりは、出張で行くのがより効果的かもしれない。英語を使う ことを強要される確率が高いと思われるので。

3. 外資系企業に転職する

これは、上記にも関連するのですが、もし、外資系に転職したら、より多くの 英語を使う機会が出てくると思います。そうなれば、英語スキルも向上するは ずで、もし、上達しないようなら、やっていけない可能性もありますよね。も ちろん、どういうポジション・職務に着くかに依存するところも大きいと思い ます。（外資系にいても、ほとんど英語をやらなくても済む場合もあるので。）

まとめ

個人的には、今でも、転職したことは良かったと思っています。（私がもとも と所属していたチームは解散になってしまっていますが、それでもです。）高 い技術力、例えばプログラミングスキルとかインフラ技術とかがあれば、外資 系企業に、エンジニアとして転職する道もあります。ある程度英語ができるこ とは求められると思いますが、エンジニアとしてなら、技術力のほうが重要で、 英語が多少できなくとも、あとは頑張ればなんとかなるんじゃないかと思いま す。

会議中などでわからなないことがあったら聞き返せばいいし、多くの人がいて 聞きづらいときには、会議後にもう一度聞いてみるとか色々やり方があるかと 思います。

実のところ、私自身、まだまだ英語スキル・技術的なスキルがまだまだ足りな いなと感じる場面が多々あり、英語について、偉そうに話す立場には無いと思っ ています。が、それくらいのレベルでも頑張ってる人がいると知ってもらえれ ば幸いですし、自分自身への発破も込めて、この記事を書きました。
